The Cottage Bar and Kitchen
It takes a particular kind of hospitality to make you feel like you’re at your nan’s while you sip cocktails beneath a tarantula.
The Cottage Bar & Kitchen is a fairy-lit terrace dotted with objet d’art, eclectic vintage pieces, colourful curiosities, botanicals, soft furnishings and a genuine feeling of whimsy (it’s a thing, OK). She’s a Balmain bar with a new lease on life, breathed in by new management and a delightful spring menu: we heard great things and were happily lead down the rabbit hole…
The menu is a playful combination of eclectic global fusions, a pinch of this and a dash of that – a theme which fits the ethos of the space, a sense of wonderment you might get as a child visiting some wacky, captivating relative. Start with the kingfish ceviche, with passionfruit dressing, served with plantain chips (featured image, $21) – it’s light, zesty and you can make little sandwiches with the banana-like plantain chips (do).
Then, you should order the lamb shoulder, with tabouli and spiced yoghurt (gf $16). If sharing, get a salad and the prettiest main – the chicken breast & wing with rice pilaf, dried fruit, yoghurt and pistachio (featured – $24). Sip your way through with the range of spring cocktails, each botanical and playful (not lolly water, but yes – pretty girly) Remember Me in The Morning was our favourite, but to be fair, we had a few and it’s a little hazy.
You should finish with the Key Lime Pie, an old favourite freshened up with rum cream. The Cottage is the kind of bar that beckons you in from the street, tempting you to while away your entire day, talking to the barmen and playing with all the vintage pieces. A childhood visit to nan’s reinvigorated- all the sweetness and stories with better smells and decidedly more booze.
